Redo the Kitchen or Replace Your San Diego Home’s Windows and Doors?

Remodeling Magazine puts out a report every year, specifically for San Diego, that takes a look at some of the most popular home remodeling projects. It looks at the average cost of what those projects go for in San Diego, as well as the amount you can expect to recoup if you then go to sell your home. The numbers for 2019 were recently released and can be found here. The site does require you to give them some personal information to view the full report, but if you don’t want to do that, we’ll give you some highlights.

Below, we’ve listed a few of the projects that will give San Diego homeowners the best return on their investment, according to the Remodeling Magazine report. Garage door replacement is the project with the best value for San Diego homeowners, but replacing your home’s windows with new vinyl windows is also a pretty good investment, with homeowners recouping, on average, 83.7% of the money spent.

Let’s take a look at some of the projects that are the best value, according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2019 Cost vs. Value Report for San Diego, CA:

Project Job Cost Resale Value Cost Recouped
Minor Kitchen Remodel $26,128 $21,803 83.4%
Window Replacement (vinyl) $18,949 $15,857 83.7%
Deck Addition (wood) $17,201 $15,213 88.4%
Garage Door Replacement $3,865 $4,204 108.8%

If you are planning to sell your home in the near future, and you want to get the most “bang for your buck” on any home upgrades, do your homework about which projects add the most to the resale value of your San Diego home. Don’t just go by platitudes like “kitchens and bathrooms sell homes.” Use actual data to make the best use of your home improvement dollars.

Window and door replacement rank high in the cost recouped category, so you can consider the money you spend on replacement windows and doors as a great investment.
