Understanding Bay and Bow Windows in San Diego

Understanding Bay and Bow Windows in San Diego

We’ve noticed that some of our customers use the terms “bay window” and “bow window” interchangeably. And while the two types of windows have similarities, they are a little bit different, and as someone shopping for replacement windows in San Diego, it would be helpful for you to know the difference.

What’s the Difference Between Bay and Bow Windows?

Bay and bow windows are both specialty “show off” windows formed from three or more windows that each project out from a wall. In a bay window the three window sections are usually joined at 45 or 30 degree angle. The center section in a bay window is typically the largest of the three and will most often be fixed in place, while the side window sections are usually vertical sliders or casement windows, able to be opened and closed to allow in fresh air.

A bow window is similar to a bay window, but typically takes a more rounded shape with additional window panels, usually a total of 4 or 5 window panels joined at 10 degree angles. Bow window configurations will typically use casement windows for the two end window panels, and fixed windows for the other sections.

When Should you Consider Adding Bay or Bow Windows to Your San Diego Home?

Bay and bow windows are perfect for areas in your home where an unobstructed view is desired, especially San Diego homes in canyon areas or along the coast with beach views. They add style and an interesting dimension to both the exterior and interior of a San Diego home. Bay and bow windows can also make a room look and feel larger by adding depth, creating the impression of a porch or balcony and can also add additional seating to your San Diego home if you add a bench in the cove that is created by the window set-up. It can create the perfect sunny spot for reading a good book.

Bay and bow windows are a great addition to the front of a home, giving it added curb appeal and character. They are also great for a small study, home office, or bedroom to providing the feeling of additional space and to bring more light into a room. Other people use them to highlight an exceptionally good view of the outdoors. No matter your reason for adding a bay or bow window to your home, you are almost certain to add to the overall value of your San Diego home.
