Is Winter a Good Time to Get My San Diego House Painted?

Is Winter a Good Time to Get My San Diego House Painted?

At my San Diego house painting company, we sometimes get asked what the best time of year is to get exterior house painting done. Fortunately, in San Diego, there is really no bad time to have your house painted. In other parts of the country, you need to account for weather when it comes to exterior house painting, but not here. San Diego only gets rain for 38 days per year, on average. That leaves more than 300 days per year when the weather is perfect for exterior painting!

One reason why you might want to consider having the exterior of your house painted in the Winter is because many plants are dormant in the Winter. Rose bushes are typically trimmed back shortly after the new year in Southern California and any trees that were trimmed in the Fall probably haven’t started growing back yet. This makes it easier for painters to get to certain parts of your home that would be more difficult to paint in the late Spring to Fall.

There are also times when house painting companies are typically busier than others. We tend to get a lot of calls in the Spring, when the weather starts to get really nice and people are spending more time outside. The Spring is also the time when people tend to start putting their houses on the market, and some homeowners want their house to have a fresh coat of paint on it before they take their listing pictures. Since my company also does staining on decks and patio covers, we get a lot of calls in the Spring to freshen those up before Summer.

Taking all of that into consideration, the Winter is a great time to call a house painting company! You will likely have less of a wait when you start the process in the Winter than you would if you called in the Spring or Summer. That being said, the last couple of years haven’t been normal in terms of wait times for house painting (or for any home improvement project for that matter). Everyone I talk to is busy. Many painting companies are understaffed (although they’re working on hiring and training new painters, but that takes time). So, even though it’s Winter, you still may need to wait several weeks, or even months, before a professional painter can start on your house.

If you want your house to get painted this Winter, don’t wait to reach out to a San Diego painting company. Start gathering quotes as soon as possible. The start of a new year is a great time to make a change in the look of your house, and new paint is a great place to start!
