Plantation Shutters Offer Elegance and Energy Savings for San Diego Homeowners

Plantation Shutters Offer Elegance and Energy Savings for San Diego Homeowners

Plantation shutters are becoming a popular option as a window treatment in San Diego homes. And it’s obvious why—they are both functional and attractive. Plantation shutters are considered an “upgrade” to most people in the housing market, so when it comes time to sell your San Diego home, you will have an edge on your competition. This makes plantation shutters a great investment in your home.

Plantation shutters are made with slats that can be tilted open, either fully or partially, to allow air and light to enter your home. Conversely, they can be fully closed to keep out light and unwanted hot or cold air. Plantation shutters are an energy-efficient addition to your home, and they provide an additional barrier of protection from the outdoor elements. This will save you money on your monthly heating and cooling bills.

However, most homeowners choose plantation shutters because they like the look of them. They can be installed using either inside or outside mounts, and can be made to fit almost any window size and shape, including curved windows.

The slats (also called louvers) in plantation shutters can vary in size from 1 ½ inches to more than 5 inches in width. Larger louvers are better for larger windows or if you want to have a better view of the outdoors. The most popular size for plantation shutter louvers tends to be 2 ½ or 3 ½ inches. A shutter with a 4 ½ inch louver will have double the amount of visibility than a window with 2 ½ inch louvers.

There are other options for customizing your plantation shutters, including adding hinges that will allow you to open them outward like a double door, or hinging a four-panel shutter to open like a bi-fold door. You can also have double-tier shutters, with separate panels on the top and bottom half of a window, allowing you to open either one or both panels to let in the desired amount of light or air into your San Diego home.

Plantation shutters are usually constructed of solid wood, but can also be made of vinyl, aluminum, or composite wood. The majority of plantation shutters are white, but stained or natural wood options are also available and equally attractive. It just depends on the look you are going for in your home. You should be able to find plantation shutters to match any existing trim in your San Diego home.

You can purchase plantation shutters online and have them installed by a local San Diego installer, or you can purchase them from any of the San Diego “big box” home improvement stores or from a specialty window treatment store.
